When I started Pupcake Sugar, I decided to make a bold move.
I was going to do something that no pup baker had ever done before. In fact, it was frowned upon and was definitely never considered the pup baker industry standard.
I decided to share my pupcake recipes online.
Now some pups may be thinking, “what’s the big deal?” How can sharing a recipe be so major? Well, it is. You see. Pupcake recipes have always been considered a pup family secret.
It’s something that is past down from one pup generation to the next. Pup bakers pass on their businesses to their pups when they retire so their business will continue for future generations to enjoy.
I came into this pupcake industry as a new pup. While a lot of pup bakers were baking the same recipes passed down from their pup parents and grandparents, I was creating recipes of my own. From the time I was little, I loved baking. So, I enjoyed testing out new spices, trying out different foods and working with both sweet and savories to come up with pupcake flavors no one had ever tried before.
Now, don’t get me wrong. There are a ton of pupcake bakers out there. Every pup has their own style. Some pups focus on the savory desserts, while others are all about the sweet. There are pup bakers that only bake vegan while other pup bakers won’t touch it if there’s no bacon on top.
However, no matter what their pupcake baking preference is, there’s one code that holds true. “Don’t share your recipes.”
The thought is that if pups decide to bake their pupcake recipes at home, then pup bakers will lose business. More importantly, if a pup’s human catches wind of their recipes, then the beauty of their pup legacy is gone. The tradition of passing on the “pup family pupcake recipe” will be stripped away from them.
However, I viewed sharing some of my pupcake recipes a bit differently. And, as the saying goes…
Create new experiences by thinking differently.
You see. My pup world exists in the city of Philadelphia. I love my pup community and wouldn’t trade it for the world. Wherever I go, whatever I do, Philadelphia will be the pup community that feels like home. However, most pups’ ability to travel is based on a human.
So, what about those pups living in Los Angeles, that’ll never make it to Philly? Or, those pups in Chicago and New York? And, let’s not forget those pups who live outside of the United States? I feel they all should have the chance to sample one of my pupcakes.
I thought long and hard about the decision to share my pupcake recipes. There were times when I was going to ditch the idea altogether. However, I began to realize that it wasn’t about “sharing pupcake recipes” as most of the other pup bakers saw it.
My pupcakes were all about creating experiences and sharing stories. What better way to create memories than baking a few pupcakes. Besides, the greatest pup family stories either begin in the kitchen or are shared with food.
So, after a lot of thought, I finally decided to make the bold move of sharing some of my pupcake recipes online. I also decided to hold a few of my pupcake recipes for myself to pass on to my puppies. These are the pupcake recipes that I hold especially near and dear to my pup heart and feel that the pup-tale behind it is one that should be kept by family.
Ironically, sharing a few of my recipes online created more awareness and pup visitors to Pupcake Sugar. And, most importantly, they remained interested in my own pup-tale attached to each pupcake and wanted to share their own.
The result was also the complete opposite of what other pup bakers thought. So, it also got them to think how they could create their own online spaces too. This process also taught me that just like every pup business owner’s journey isn’t the same, neither is their pup business.
So, you don’t have to do what every other pup business does just because “every pup does it this way.”
Pup business ownership is about making your own rules. It’s about making your own way. As long as your pup heart is in the right place and you stay in line with your pup business values, being unique in your approach will always help you stand out. It also leaves room to be creative about your pup business as you work towards your goals.
These Apple Maple Oatmeal Muffin Pupcakes are dedicated to “thinking different” and finding ways to create new lanes for you and your pup business.
