The first time is always the most memorable.
Whether it’s short and sweet, howl-arious, or even a bit unexpected, the first time always leads to a learning curve. Even those first encounters that started off a little confusing have been known to be the beginning of an unforgettable story. In the words of Agatha Christie…
The first time you do a thing is always exciting.
So, make sure you remember to celebrate them. Thanks to my BFF, Cynn, my first time came a little quicker than I thought it would. Pupcake Sugar wasn’t always the pupcakery we know today. It started off as an unexpected catering job.
Cynn is an interior designer. She designs for pups looking to sprinkle a little love into their living or event spaces. One of her clients, Sage, was hosting a “Pupcakes & Tea” event to launch her new tea company. She was looking for a baker to provide pupcakes for the event. Excited about the opportunity to help get my business started, Cynn immediately volunteered my name.
Next thing I knew, I was barking on the phone with Sage about pupcake and tea pairings, how many she expected for the event, and set up logistics. This was a major first step to get Pupcake Sugar off the ground. I was excited on the outside, but so nervous on the inside.
“Are you crazy?” I thought. “There’s no way you’re ready to bake 200 pupcakes.” But, like Cynn told me at Yappy Hour that night, “You better get ready. Pupcakes & Tea is in 4 weeks.”
So, I spent the next few weeks navigating this new “crazy idea.”
Between planning trying out new recipes, researching tea flavors, packaging, and organizing the event day logistics, my life was nothing but pupcakes for four weeks. However, it paid off.
I ended up with 200 hundred individually wrapped pupcakes ready to make their debut. Everyone at Pupcakes & Tea loved my pupcakes. In fact, crowd favorite turned out to be these Mac & Cheese Pupcakes, which seemed to pair well with Sage’s Sweet Green Tea.
Pupcakes & Tea was one for the books. Between all the twists, turns and unexpected dips, this learning curve turned out to be really exciting. Because of Cynn, I was able to push past my comfort zone and take the first step in my pupcake journey. Plus, this was the first time I was paid for doing something I loved doing, baking pupcakes.
I even decided to turn this experience into a new first by renting a booth to sell my pupcakes at the Snout Market, which is a seasonal fair for pups to showcase their creative businesses. I guess that’s the great thing about firsts. They always lead to other firsts. So, I’d love to hear from you.
