“Can’t Sleep? Try Counting Pupcakes.”
Wide Awake
“I know. I know.” Sugar barked to Basil as she turned out the lights for bed. “But I gotta make my final decision tomorrow morning”. So, Sugar laid in her bed, wide awake, staring in the dark. Thinking.
Sugar was sleepy. She’d been up since 5:00 AM that morning and spent most of the day prepping her workstations in her pupcakery kitchen. So, staring at the darkness against the wall while she planned to be sleeping was not on her Bingo card.
Sugar was determined to make her final decision before she fell asleep. She turned over and nudged Basil. “Bay, you up?” she woofed. No answer. Basil was sound asleep. “How the bark did he fall asleep so fast?” Sugar grumbled.
So, since she couldn’t sleep and she didn’t feel like getting out of bed, Sugar figured she’d touch up her nails. Her nail file and polish were sitting on her night table next to her. Maybe focusing on something else would inspire a decision so Sugar could finally get some sleep.
Only Room for One Pupcake on the Menu
Sugar’s pupcakery menu was a big deal. Although important, flavor wasn’t the only thing that she had to consider when choosing the pupcakes for the menu. The cost of ingredients, storage requirements, availability of the ingredients, and potential dog allergies, were huge factors in what pupcake flavors Sugar would choose.
Sugar had one more pupcake flavor she had to choose. However, she couldn’t decide whether that spot would go to her Mac & Cheese Pupcakes or her Apple Cobbler Pupcakes.
Sugar’s Mac & Cheese Pupcakes were her favorite, with or without the frosting. No pupcakery in town had them on their menu. However, these pupcakes are usually more popular round the holiday season. So, she wasn’t sure dogs would want to buy them all year.
Her Apple Cobbler Pupcakes take a little more time to prep. But dogs go crazy for them. Plus, apples are better for dogs with dairy allergies.
Sugar would love to add both pupcakes to the menu. But there was only room for one. Sugar needed to decide before she fell asleep, so she could start shopping for ingredients in the morning.
What’s That Smell?
“Shug? Really?” Basil woofed. Sugar woke him up while she was doing her nails. “Sorry, Bay. I’m done now.” Sugar answered as she turned out the light on her side. Basil rolled back over and went back to sleep.
Sugar, again, laid quietly in her bed staring into the dark. She kept her paws stretched out waiting for the polish to dry. And Sugar still hadn’t decided what pupcake she was going to add to the menu. She was 2 seconds from falling asleep without her final decision when she thought, “This polish stinks!”
The smell took a few seconds to hit Sugar’s nose. But when it did, her eyes popped right back open. She started to think painting her nails before bed probably wasn’t a good idea.
The polish smell lingered and turned Sugar’s thoughts to focus on the polish instead of her pupcakes.
Apple Cobbler Pupcakes Made the Cut
After a few moments, that polish smell inspired a thought. More like a memory. Several months ago, Sugar hosted a pupcake decorating party for her BFFs at her house. She laid out an assortment of topping options on her kitchen table for them to choose. Sweet ones. Savory ones. Colorful ones. Crunchy ones. And yes, even gooey ones.
Her Apple Cobbler topping was everyone’s favorite. The topping smelled amazing. A lot better than that nail polish drying on Sugar’s nails. Her BFF, Ginger, even barked about how the Apple Cobbler topping smelled like her favorite candle and tasted like home.
“That’s it.” Sugar woofed to herself. “Apple Cobbler Pupcakes it is.” Which was also the perfect match to her Sniffari themed pupcakery grand opening.
As the polish finished drying on her nails, Sugar’s eyes got heavier and heavier until she finally fell asleep. She finally decided the last pupcake flavor for her menu. Just in time to shop for ingredients in the morning.
