I love the sound of paper.
Honestly, to me it makes the coolest one of the sounds ever to me. Whether it’s the rattling of tissue paper, the ripping of old papers, or even the crumbling sound of wax paper, it sounds like absolute music to my ears.
Anytime I hear paper, it immediately catches my ear and I have to come running. In fact, I have been known to appear out of nowhere when I hear the sound of a food wrapper.
A little over a year and a half ago, Mom came home with a new toy for me. It looked like Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer on the outside. However, the inside had a cool sound. Every time I played with it, I could hear the sound of crinkling paper.
One day, I decided that I was going to do all I could to get that paper out of my toy. I spent the next several months biting, throwing, stretching, and pawing at this reindeer looking toy to get the paper out.
It became my passion project.
I mean, I hustled like anything to do everything I could to complete that project. I worked days, nights, even weekends. And, nothing changed. The paper still stayed lodged inside Rudolph.
Working so hard and getting the same result became extremely frustrating. I became drained and overwhelmed after a while. Until, finally, I stopped playing with the toy altogether.
All of the creativity, motivation, and inspiration I had when I first started had completely been stripped away. It was in that moment I knew I needed to take a break before complete burnout set in. I had to admit to Mom and myself…
Burnout is totally real. And before it distracts me from achieving my goals, I’m taking a vacation.
Vacations, staycations, getaways, and breaks are completely necessary. They help us recharge, so we can return to our daily responsibilities, jobs, routines and projects with a renewed energy. In fact, it has been scientifically proven that humans (and pups) who take vacations are more productive.
The way I see it. Work will always be there. Taking a break is a great way to relax your mind, body, and spirit to conquer all of those tasks. Vacations are a great form of self-care. In the words of Eleanor Brown…
Self-care is not selfish. You cannot serve from an empty vessel.
So, whether it’s an expensive vacation, a simple staycation, or a quick break, take it. Disconnecting for a little while will definitely restore you from all the frustration and help you think a more clearly.
As for me, I decided to take a quick “Sugar-cation,” which is nothing more than a staycation with a whole lot of Sugar. For three days, I took the time to relax and be with myself. All I did was wake up, eat pupcakes, soak up the sun, and repeat.
And, my Sugar-cation was definitely worth it. I came back feeling creative, inspired, and with a new strategy. I continued to work for the next few months on this passion project of mine and finally was able to get that paper out of Rudolph. GOAL ACHIEVED!
