Working from home is great. But when I do, Sugar wants attention and doesn’t care that I have a Zoom meeting in a few minutes. So, I learned quickly that a dog-friendly work from home space was necessary. In fact, a Forbes article reports, that nearly 25% of U.S. dog owners are willing to take a 10% pay cut if they could work remotely with their dog.
This blog post is dedicated to the dog moms that work from home. We’re sharing a few tips to turn your space into a dog-friendly creative oasis.
WHAT IS A DOG-FRIENDLY WORK FROM HOME SPACE
A dog-friendly work from home space is more than just a dog bed for your dog to lay in while you’re on a Zoom meeting. Or, more than a few toys on the floor to keep her occupied. A dog-friendly work from home space considers your dog’s comfort, safety, and engagement while incorporating an aesthetic that fits your work goals, objectives, and aspirations.
It’s a place where your creativity and dog’s well-being are nurtured. It’s also a space that encourages bonding with your dog while you’re getting things done.
WHY CREATING A DOG-FRIENDLY WORKSPACE IS IMPORTANT
I don’t know about you, but Sugar has no qualms about barking as soon as I get on a work call. She also has no shame in pawing at my knee to tell me that she wants attention when I’m trying to finish up that last email. However, a dog-friendly workspace helps increase productivity by:
Reducing Stress Levels
A pet-friendly environment can lower stress levels. In fact, it’s scientifically proven that petting and hugging your dog can decrease stress levels. It also increases oxytocin, which is known as the “love hormone.” leading to increased productivity and job satisfaction. This can create a happier and peaceful work environment.
Promoting Companionship
Sometimes working from home can cause feelings of isolation. Especially, if most of your meetings are virtual. Having a dog-friendly work from home space gives you and your dog a chance to bond throughout the day and provides constant companionship.
Fostering Creativity
A space that is comfortable for both you and your dog can enhance creativity by boosting your energy. Being with your dog can also help elevate your mood, which can inspire creative ideas.
STEPS TO CREATING A DOG-FRIENDLY WORKSPACE
Creating a space requires a little thought, but it also gives you a chance to get creative. You can tailor your space to fit both you and your dog’s needs.
Assess Your Needs and Your Dog’s
Consider what you both require from the space. Your dog’s size, schedule, and even your dog’s attention needs all come to play when thinking about your space.
Choose the Right Location
Pick an area that’s comfortable for both you and your dog. Whether it’s an office or corner in your room. The space that will fit your dog’s needs and you help you be productive with your workday.
Incorporate Comfortable Furnishings & Necessities
Find furniture that are comfortable and cozy for both you and your dog. Also bring in any necessities that will help keep your dog occupied throughout the workday. This includes toys, puzzles, or your dog’s favorite blanket.
Set A Schedule
Many dogs learn from routine. Set a schedule for you and your dog. For instance, a morning and/or afternoon walk schedule or a lunch schedule. Your dog will settle into the routine and (usually) understand the difference between work and play time.
5 MATERIALS & RESOURCES YOU CAN INCLUDE IN YOUR DOG-FRIENDLY WORKSPACE
Now that we’ve identified how to set up a workspace, let’s get creative. Here are a few things to make your work from home space inspiring for both you and your dog.
Ergonomic Office Furniture
Invest in a good chair and desk to support your posture. Especially, if you’re working several hours at a desk. The specific furniture can also help with building a schedule for your dog. If you use this furniture when you’re working, your dog will learn that when you’re sitting at the desk that it’s time to work.
Durable Dog Bed
Designate a special spot in your workspace for your dog’s bed. This way your dog can sit, sleep, or entertain herself while you’re in a Zoom meeting.
Organizational Tools
Organizing your space will help you be able to find the materials and information you need quicker. It also keeps your space clean and desk clear, which can help you be productive. An organized area will help prevent your dog from destroying an important document or equipment in your workspace.
Desk Candy
I’m all for a little inspirational artwork or motivational phrases on my desk. Desk candy also includes pictures of your family, friends, and yes…your dog. During a busy day, having some pictures that make you smile, or motivational phrases can be just the Sugar boost (pun intended) you need to get through the day.
Natural Light and Plants
Plants and natural light are also a good mood booster. Natural light helps you and your dog get some Vitamin D, which is great for boosting energy. Plants in a workspace also lower stress levels, reduce noise, and can make a workspace feel more inviting.
3 WAYS TO TAKE A BREAK WITH YOUR DOG FROM WORKING IN YOUR WORK FROM HOME SPACE
All work and no play make for a boring from home space. What’s the point of working from home if you can’t spend more time your dog. Plus, it gives you a chance to step away from what you’re working on to reset and refresh. So, here are three ways to take a break with your dog when you’re working from home.
Stretch and Play
Use your break to engage in a short play session with your dog. Rub your dog’s belly, play tug of war, do a quick doga stretch, or even have a quick “dog mommy and me” dance break. Your dog will jump at the chance to bond on a work break.
Pupcake Break
Share a moment with your dog by treating them to a pupcake while you enjoy a coffee or snack. It’s also a nice treat for your dog to have as a reward during the day.
Mindfulness Walks
Take a brief walk outside with your dog to clear your mind and invigorate your senses. A 20-minute walk is a nice refresh and can go a long way.
Pupcake Sugar has given me a way to create my own recipe. That includes creating a space that inspires me to go after my dreams and spend some precious bonding time with my dog. Creating a dog-friendly workspace for you not only gives you a space to set the tone for your own professional growth, but you’re creating another environment to help you bond with your dog. It’s self-care with the things we do every day.
