4 Ways to Take Control of Any New Situation

4 Ways to Take Control of Any Situation...even when you're social distancing

Trying something new is hard.

But it’s definitely worth it.  Yeah, you may feel like you need a nap afterwards.  And, sure you may feel like you’ve never worked this hard in your life.  However…

All new things lead to a great story.

Plus, things are never as easy as they look on YapTube.  Now, don’t get me wrong.  There are levels to trying new things.  Some new things are more difficult than others.

Like the time I tried the recipe for these Apple Oatmeal Muffin Pupcakes for the first time and managed to completely burn them up in the oven.  Here’s a tip.  Baking and the pup hangries are a bad combination.  Or, the time I decided to plan my first pupcake pop up and somehow order the wrong pupcake boxes.  And, let’s not forget the time I tried indoor rock climbing and realized that this pup is scared of heights.

You see.  I wouldn’t have all these great stories to tell if I didn’t at least try to doga stretch outside of my comfort zone once in a while.

So, before you let any pup tell you that trying something new is easy, I’m here to tell you it’s not.  However, I encourage you to try anyway.  And, here are 4 little pup gems to reduce the nervousness of trying something new. Even if it’s super hard.

STAY CALM

I know.  I know.  Easier said than done.  However, stepping out of a comfort zone can cause some pups to panic from time to time.  I mean, really.  You try climbing to the top of a wall and looking down without feeling like you’re gonna, I don’t know, fall.  Panicking in a new situation won’t make it any easier to solve, conquer and add it to your wealth of stories.  So, create a way for yourself to stay calm in new situations.  Whether, it’s taking a quick break or running through a few bark-firmations, staying calm will always keep your mind focused on getting through any situation.

BE OPEN TO BEING UNCOMFORTABLE

I’m a planner.  If this journey has taught me anything else it has taught me to remain organized.  However, sometimes things don’t go our way.  So, we have to grow comfortable with being, well, uncomfortable.  It teaches us to adapt to change a lot quicker and honestly makes it easier for us to live in the moment.  And, learning to live in the moment is what trying new things is all about.

MAKE MISTAKES

A lot of pups don’t try anything new because they’re afraid to make mistakes.  However, mistakes are how you learn and grow.  For instance, do you know how many times I fell down the steps as a pup before I learned to climb them.  Now, I’m climbing indoor rock walls.  Give yourself permission to make mistakes.  I promise you.  Once you do that, you’ll be more open to trying new things.

ASK FOR HELP

We don’t have all the answers.  There’s always another pup who’s more knowledgeable about a topic.  So, if you find yourself in a new situation that you can’t figure out on your own, ask for help.  Ask a pup friend.  Ask a mentor.  And if there’s no other pup around, try asking ALEXA.  I wish I would’ve asked for some advice on ordering boxes for a pupcake pop up.  I would’ve saved a lot of time and effort.

Believe it or not, there was a time when I used to talk myself out of doing anything new.  It wasn’t until I started playing with the idea of owning my own business that I became more willing to step outside of my comfort zone.  As much as I love sharing all of my stories about my new pup adventures, I love to hear other stories too.

What inspires you to step out of your comfort zone and try something new?
