5 Ways to Save Money on Baking Ingredients During Holiday Season

Saving Money on Baking Ingredients

I’m all about a budget.  And now that It’s getting colder outside, there’s going to be a lot more baking in my house.  Especially, during the holiday season.  The more I bake, the more ingredients I need to buy.  Here are five ways that I save money on my baking ingredients.

BUY IN BULK

There are several spices and ingredients that I use regularly, such as flour, baking powder, cinnamon, etc.  I tend to buy those ingredients in bulk or in bigger sizes to avoid going to store more often.  Especially, since some stores tend to run out of ingredients quicker during the holiday season.  This way I’ll always have my staples in the house.  Make sure you check the expiration date on your ingredients if you do this.  Most dry ingredients will last for at least 4 to 6 months.

SHOP SEASONAL & LOCAL

Ingredients are often more affordable, fresher, and easier to find when you shop local or seasonal ingredients.  It’s also a great way to introduce your dog to new scents and tastes, like these Cinnamon Vanilla Pupcakes.  Cinnamon is abundant during the holiday season.  Vanilla bean powder is also a great specialty item to add to your ingredient list.  It not only stores easily, but also has an amazing aroma.

REPURPOSE LEFTOVERS

In my house, we don’t waste food.  In fact, a lot of my pupcake recipes were created because I had some extra food that I didn’t want to go bad.  You know, like those vegetables that seem to go forgotten in the fridge.  So, instead of letting them go bad, I turn them into pupcakes.  Sweet potatoes, rice and veggies, and oatmeal are just a few great leftover items that can be transformed to an amazing pupcake.

COMPARE PRICES

Sometimes a little comparison shopping helps with saving money.  You can use apps like Flipp, look online, or price things out in the actual store.  This may take a little more time, but it may help you save money in the long run.  It may also be helpful to plan your shopping list in advance to give you more time to comparison shop.

PLAN & PRIORITIZE YOUR MENU

Map out a plan for your baking activities.  Then make your purchases based on your schedule.  This way you can shop for ingredients when they’re cheaper or buy your ingredients before you need them.  You can also buy your ingredients in phases, so that you’re not buying everything all at once.  It’ll give you more time to bargain shop.
