Sugar Reclaims Her Time & Indulges With These Pup-tella Pupcakes

Nutella and summer inspired dog treat recipe for Pup-tella Pupcakes

I used to cringe at the phrase, “Let’s jump on a quick call to discuss.”

It usually came at the end of some forwarded email or some cryptic text message I’d receive from my manager.  The majority of these “quick” calls take forever.  If it’s a conference call, it usually turns out to be nothing but pups barking their opinions with one another with nothing getting done.  And, these so called “quick calls” usually lead to pointless follow up meetings.

One day, I got trapped on one of these “quick calls.”  It was literally 30 minutes before I was scheduled to leave for the day.  I’d finished all my action items, and was counting down the minutes until it was time for me to go home.  Then boom…

An email appears in my inbox from my pup manager with that dreaded phrase “can you jump on a quick call to discuss?”

In my heart of hearts, I wanted to say no.  As a pup business owner with an actual day job, my time is precious.  There are only two hours between the time I get off work and my human gets home.  I use those two hours to work on my pup business.

So, “jumping on a quick call” at the end of my work day will get in the way of what I want to do for myself.  However, the reality is that I need this job for the time being.

Unfortunately, I spent the next 2 hours listening to pups bark back in forth about expanding the business to cat products, which has absolutely nothing to do with me.  Not to mention that after the call was over, I had only 30 minutes to get home before my human and would have no time to complete anything I wanted to do for my pup business.

In that moment, however, I realized that if I was going to step into this world of pup business ownership that I was going to have to be more strategic with my time.  I was going to have to learn to use my time at my job to get things done for my pup business.

It was a risk, but I was willing to take it.  I was more than ready to “reclaim my time.”  I was willing to do whatever I needed to do to work towards my dream.  And as Katharine Hepburn stated…

If you obey all the rules, you miss all the fun.

So, I began to be really strategic about my work day.  The rule of not working on my pup business at my job went out the window.  During the morning, I made a point of getting ahead on all of my projects.  This way if anyone asked me for an update I’d be able to forward it to them with no problem.  I reduced the amount of time I spent socializing at other pups’ desks so that I could complete tasks on my list.

During the afternoon, I’d make it look like I was busy with work for my job.  I’d leave documents open on my computer screen, and scroll through them every once in a while.  In actuality I was taking care of my pup business straight from my personal pup-phone.

I carried my personal notebook everywhere.  So, if I was sitting in a boring meeting or stuck on a “quick conference call” I could write down ideas for my pup business.  My other pup co-workers thought I was taking notes.  And since I was on top of all of my work and projects, no one ever questioned me about what I was working on.

Now, I’m not advocating that everyone do the same thing. However, as a pup business owner with a full-time job you have to get creative and strategic with your time.  If not, we run the risk of talking ourselves out of going after our dreams or quitting before we even get started.

So, I encourage all pups looking to dive into pup business ownership to become really strategic in how you spend your time.  As the saying goes “work smarter, not harder.”  And, don’t be afraid to continue to revise your schedule.  You’ll definitely have to as you grow within your pup business.

These Pup-tella Pupcakes are dedicated to owning our day and reclaiming our time.

And of course, we believe that every pupcake has a love story.  So, while your favorite pup is PUPPY LOVIN’ on these pupcakes, we’d love to hear from you.
