Leave the Gray: A Story From Sugar’s Pupcakery

“Every dog needs a care schedule.”

Sugar Gets Ready to Promote Her Pupcakes

After Sugar got back from her Gotcha Day Trip, she felt refreshed and ready for her grand opening.  The week before she opened her pupcakery, Sugar planned a series of promotional events with the dog business owners on the block.  She wanted to generate a little buzz about her pupcakes.

Sugar loved the location of her new pupcakery because it was located next to several community dog businesses. So, these promotional events were a way to get to know the other businesses on the block.

Sugar was getting ready in the mirror at home when, “Bark!  Is that…,” she thought.  “…A gray hair.  Luckily this was the day Sugar was giving out free samples of her pupcakes at Root & Coat Dog Spa.  Maybe the dogs at the spa could give Sugar some tips on how to get rid of it.

A Humbling Experience

Every dog has moments when they realize they’re not puppies anymore.  It’s the little things.  For Sugar it was taking more vitamins, the extra doctor’s appointments, and the occasional blood tests.  But this gray hair was humbling.

However, Sugar had a promotional event to host.  So, this gray hair was gonna have to wait. “Hopefully, none of the other dogs will notice,” Sugar thought.

Sugar packed up her pupcakes, promotional flyers, and display equipment into the car and headed to the spa.

Root & Coat Inspired Pupcakes

Root & Coat Dog Spa has been on the block for a few years.  Their mission is to show love to every dog’s curls.

Every dog needs a care schedule.  So, Sugar has been going to Root & Coat for years to get her curls fluffed.  She even baked a few pupcakes for some of their events.  So, they were excited she was finally opening her business on the same block and happy to help her promote her grand opening.

Root vegetables are amazing for a dog’s curls.  So, Sugar chose Carrot Cake Pupcakes for her promotional event.

The dogs at the event loved them too.  Sugar walked into the spa with 4 dozen pupcake samples and they were gone after an hour.  She even got a few pre-orders for pupcakes for dogs to pick up during the grand opening.

The event was successful, but “I’m beat.” Sugar barked to the stylist, Beet, as she sat in her chair.  “I’m sure.”  Beet barked.  “So, let’s start getting these curls in order.  But…what’s up with is gray hair?”

Leave the Gray

Sugar forgot about that gray hair she found this morning.  She was so focused on her promotional event that she didn’t give it a second thought once she got to the spa.

Sugar got the idea to open her pupcakery when she was 5 dog years old.  A lot of dogs she knew were already set in their careers and lives.  So, starting from scratch felt intimidating.  Sugar thought she might be too old.  Every dog she knew that started a business had done it by the time they were 2 dog years old.

So, that morning the gray hair Sugar found while looking in the mirror reminded her of the self-doubt she had before she started.  But she moved forward anyway.

That gray hair wasn’t gonna stop no show.  If nothing else it became a reminder of every learning curve, dip, and drop Sugar conquered to get to this place.

“Leave it.”  Sugar barked to Beet.  “It’s my wisdom shining through.”  Sugar felt confident and ready to stop into her dream career.  So, she and Beet walked back to the sink to get those curls in order.  “Now, if this gray hair starts to get some friends…” Sugar barked to Beet, “…we gonna have to figure out how to cover them”
