Sugar’s Recipe Journal: Why This Dog Needs A Routine

Dog Mom Routine

“Mom kept our morning routine simple”

ROUTINES…I GET IT FROM MY MAMA

Listen.  I’m all about a barking routine.  That’s another thing I get from my mama.  My mom worked (and still works) a full-time job.  So, she taught me and my siblings, Vanilla, Mocha, and Cane the importance of a routine when we were puppies.  Especially, in the morning.

On her workdays, we had one job.  “Get our little selves together so mom isn’t late for work.”

Mom kept our morning routine simple.  Good thing too.  Because I have a short attention span. So, simple routines are easy for me to remember.

I mean, let a fire engine ride past my house.  I’m all up in the window trying to see where it goes.  Or if I hear another dog outside.  Believe me.  We barking.

I guess that’s why I love baking pupcakes.  It’s the one thing that keeps me focused.  Especially, those Chicken & Waffle Pup…wait.  Wait.  There I go with my short attention span again.  Back to simple routines.

Our morning routine was simple.  Get up.  Get dressed.  Eat breakfast.  Grab our lunches.  And get our paws out the door.  Honestly, as puppies we found it annoying.  We wanted to do our own thing.  But now, as a pupcakepreneur who’s also dog adulting, I barking get it.

I have a routine for almost everything.  Even for date night with my Basil.

OUR NON-NEGOTIABLE DATE NIGHT ROUTINE

Friday is date night.  Between my pupcakery, Basil’s medical practice, and our dog adulting responsibilities, no day every looks the same.

Like today.  Someone delivered a package to my house by accident.  I had to track down the PUPS delivery driver just so they can take it back.

In a nutshell, we’re busy.  That’s why we have or weekly date nights.  Whether we do something big like a concert or cozy like a movie on the couch, Friday is our night.

Our non-negotiable for date night is our “Pupcake Toast.”  I pack 2 pupcakes for us to eat together.  One for Basil and one for me.  We toast our pupcakes to each other at the beginning of each date night.  Barking corny.  I know.  But it’s our corny little date night routine.

To keep it spicy, we switch up the pupcake flavor each week.  Mainly because I pack a flavor that was on Pupcake Sugar’s menu that day.

DATE NIGHT PUPCAKERY CLOSE OUT ROUTINE

Having a simple routine helps me keep thing straight.  But sometimes I still end up running late.  Because…life.  More like Pupcake Sugar.

Last week, The Barkwood Organization was in town for their annual conference.  The conference was right down the street from my pupcakery at the convention center.

I figured, “Why not advertise Pupcake Sugar during the convention?”  I thought it may be a good way to attract some new business.  And I was barking right.

New dogs came into my pupcakery all day.  Anytime we took a new batch of pupcake out of the oven, another group of dogs would come in wanting pupcakes.  There was even a point when the line for the pupcakery was outside the door.

Dogs were ordering two and three pupcakes at a time.  One dog even ordered two dozen extra Banana Bread Pupcakes so he could take them home.

Thank goodness we have our checkout routine down to a science.  If we didn’t have one, we would’ve panicked with this many new customers.

I’m extremely grateful for the new business.  However, I completely lost track of time.  By the time our last customer left, I only had 30 minutes before my date night with Basil.  Date night was looking like a wash.  But Friday is our night.  So, I was determined to make it.

FINALLY MADE IT TO DATE NIGHT

On date night mornings, I pack 2 pupcakes for Basil and my “Pupcake Toast” and set them to the side.  This way I can grab them on my way out the door.

Now, all I had to do was close out my pupcakery to meet Basil.  And my routine was simple just like mama taught us.

Clean the kitchen.  Close the books.  Change your clothes.  Grab your pupcakes.  Get out the door.  And lock it.  As I was heading out the door, Basil sent me a text.  “Meet me in The Herb’N Gardens.”

“I know.”  I barked to Basil as I walked towards him.  “Sorry I’m late.”  Unfortunately, we missed our dinner reservation at Thyme & Ginger Restaurant.  I was just too late.  So, Basil decided to do a quick pivot; a night walk at The Herb’N Gardens.  There were several food vendors there and it was the night of their fountain light music show.

Basil and I sat on one of the benches to watch the show.  We also did our weekly Pupcake Toast routine before the show started.  Because date night just wouldn’t feel right without it.
