I’m just gonna say it. Twenty BARKING twenty.
I know I’m not the only one that feels this way. This year has been full of twists and turns. I had plans. Big plans. And, believe me. Quarantining wasn’t one of them.
The pup business owner journey is already unique, but adding an unexpected pandemic and a quarantine makes the bend in that learning curve a lot deeper.
I’ve spent the last few weeks in pup survival mode. As I plowed my way through virtual calls, last minute meetings and finding the perfect mask to bake Sugar’s Sweet Cake Pupcakes orders in, I forgot to check in with the most important part of this whole equation. ME.
Sure. I’m a fan of #PupSelfCareSundays. I live for my virtual woofs with my BFFs. And, I adore my date nights with Bay. However, after this storm got a little quieter and I had time to reflect, I began to realize that this temporary detour I had to take on this pup business ownership road trip is scary.
This unknown is a hard pupcake to swallow even if it’s covered in peanut butter. As the saying goes…
What we plan for ourselves isn’t always what life has planned for us.
And, we all know that the best road trips often come from an unexpected change in plans. Let’s face it. Temporary detours, even though inconvenient, often lead to the best stories. But, nevertheless, they’re still scary. So, here are three ways to help you handle those temporary detours this pup life may throw at you.
GO BACK TO BASICS
The natural reaction to any unexpected detour is to go into survival mode. The most important thing in many of our minds is to find a solution. However, we can get so bogged down with deadlines, strategy sessions and putting band aids on things, that our goals and missions get lost. In some cases, it may even cause a pup to give up completely. So, whenever a temporary detour comes to fruition, it’s always important to go back to basics. Think about why you started. Hold it tight in your heart and your paw. Keeping that “why” with you every step of the way will help you stay focused as you navigate your way through the temporary detour.
IDENTIFY WHAT YOU WANT
Sometimes a temporary detour comes along to help you reflect on whether you’re actually headed in the right direction. It may even come along to force you to focus on what you really want. That’s why anyone can turn a temporary detour into something beautiful. It’s all about knowing what you want. So, now that you’ve determined your “why,” take this time to really reflect on what you want.
MAKE A PLAN
Plans change. Detours happen. However, having a plan in place always makes it easier to maneuver. Believe me. It’s much easier revising or postponing a plan than it is to create one from scratch. So, after you’ve identified what you want to achieve on this temporary detour, create a strategy to help you focus on achieving your goals.
Pupcake Sugar was born out of a temporary detour. After being laid off from my job at BarkScent Magazine, I had a lot of time on my paws to experiment with different pupcake recipes. Who knew that my own pupcakery and spa would come from it? So, I’d love to hear from you.
