This year I managed to FINALLY run down the stairs to the basement.
To some, this may seem like a small feat. I mean really, how big of an accomplishment could it be to walk down a flight of steps? However, to me it was a big deal.
For years, I’ve been scared to walk down those steps. I would stand and watch as my Mom would run down to get something she needed and then runback up. Something about those basement steps seemed steep, dark and unknown. I was afraid of what may be waiting for me at the bottom.
When I was a puppy, I tried to walk down those steps and failed miserably. I put my front paw on the first step and tripped, landing 3 steps down. That failure lived with me from that moment forward and became my focus every time I even looked at those steps. So, in retrospect, I was also afraid to fail.
But, one day this fall something in me changed. I was sick of being afraid of what I would find if I walked down there. So, once Mom opened the door to the basement, I darted down the steps. To my surprise, I found soft carpet and plenty of room to run around. I even found a new couch for me to lay on when I’m looking for a little alone time.
My world of opportunity opened up so much more that day. It was a true accomplishment that has given me the courage to try so much more. It’s true…
Each and every accomplishment starts with a decision to try.
It also starts with the decision to relieve yourself of all the times that we’ve attempted and failed. As we enter into a new year, most of us (humans and pups alike) tend to reflect on how far we’ve come during the year. All of the joys, heartaches, failures and successes.
If we’re not careful, this reflective period can lead us to focus on the negative. All of the times we turned left when we should’ve turned right. The moments we wish we could take back. The times we failed, made a mistake or were even afraid to try. As Michelle Obama wrote “Failure is a feeling long before it becomes an actual result.”
Well, so is success and accomplishment. Focus on that feeling. As you reflect, sit with the feeling of all your accomplishments this year. Whether you hit some major goal or something as simple as making that appointment. An accomplishment is a win, no matter how big or small.
So, this year I choose to focus on making it down those basement steps. Honestly, I bet if we all took a step back and thought about our year, we’ll all realize that we succeeded a lot more than we “failed.”

Best pup cakes ever!! Made them for my dog’s fourth birthday. The recipe was easy, made from common ingredients I had on hand. They tasted good enough for people to eat. The frosting was on point. We love these, will definitely make them again! Thx so much.
Happy 4th Birthday to your dog! It brings my heart joy to know that your dog enjoyed them. Thank you so much for sharing.
Pupcakes were wonderful! We have 8 amazing dogs and these were a big hit with all…including our 5 kitties! I made this recipe to celebrate our Jonathan (the oldest of our pack) turning 16 years old! We ended up with 16 pupcakes! 🙂 They didn’t last long! Thank you! PS. I substituted the yogurt with pumpkin…turned out great!
Happy 16th Birthday Jonathan! That’s amazing. I’m so glad Jonathan and the other pups and kitties loved the pupcakes. Pupcakes are always a good way to get the party started. I hope everyone had a wonderful time celebrating. 🙂
