How To Take A Risk & Turn It Into A Plan

New Year Goals

I’m sure your list is full of things to do.  However, there’s one thing you should do in the new year.

Take a risk.

That’s one thing I’ve definitely learned from baking pupcakes.  The more risks you take, the more flavor you add to your menu.  Taking risks and pushing myself out of my comfort zone has done right by me.

Now, don’t get me wrong.  Taking risks isn’t always sunshine and peanut butter.  But, through every stretch and uncomfortable situation it’s always taken me where I want to go.  So, taking a risk became the topic for my annual Sugar’s Dish Yap Session.

I host Sugar’s Dish Yap Session at Pupcake Sugar around this time of the year to encourage pups to go into the new year with a plan to achieve their goals.  The way I see it, pupcakes and friends with goals always lead to a great bark-versation.  So, why not inspire one another to turn our “crazy ideas” into a reality.  In the words of Paulo Coelho…

If it’s still in your mind, it is worth taking the risk.

Sugar’s Dish Yap Session is filled with a day of workshops, small breakout sessions, and, of course, pupcakes.  At the end of the event every pup leaves with a plan in hand to start working towards their goal for the new year.

Honestly, I’m a planner at heart.  Most of the time I can’t take a risk without putting a plan together.  Even if it’s just a quick one I outlined on a napkin.  Thanks to baking pupcakes, I’ve learned that all my plans need to have at least three elements.

TIME

There’s always a timeline tied to baking.  Whether it’s the time you’re supposed to take them out of the oven, the time it takes to bake them, or the time the order needs to be delivered, timing is everything.  It’s especially important when it comes to creating a plan.  It helps build the structure of each task that needs to be completed.  So, any plans tied to those risks you’re taking need to have a timeline attached to it.

BUDGET

A budget is important when it comes to baking pupcakes.  How much do I need to spend on ingredients and supplies?  How much are these ingredients going to cost me?  The budget helps me identify what and how pupcakes I can afford to bake at any particular time.  Especially, when I’m trying out a new recipe.  That’s why with any risk, it’s important to create a budget to go along with it.

RESOURCES

Without ingredients, there are no pupcakes.  Trust me.  You can’t have Soul Holiday Pupcakes without collard greens or black-eyed peas.  So, as much as possible it’s important to map out all the resources you need when you take a risk.  Also, know that you may not be able to identify everything, especially if you’ve never done something before.  However, mapping out the basics will always help you lay the groundwork.

Now, I’d love to hear from you.  Let’s dish about those plans, shall we?
