Sugar’s Recipe Journal: Getting My Business License

business license

“Is this the barking line?”

WHERE’S MY PUPCAKERY BUSINESS LICENSE

I’d been waiting for weeks for my permanent pupcakery business license to come in the mail.  I submitted my paperwork before I opened and they gave me a temporary license to use while they processed my permanent one.  But after a few weeks, several trips to the mailbox, and hundreds of baked pupcakes, my license still hadn’t arrived.

I waited as long as I could, but my temporary license was expiring 10 days.  So, I called the pupcakery business license office.  They kept me on hold for 10 minutes before they transferred me to the right department.

Don’t get me wrong.  The dog on the phone was nice.  But after no response from the office, a 10-minute hold, and still no license, I was frustrated when she let me know there was an issue with my application.  “What do you mean there’s an issue?” I barked.

MISSING WOOF-NINES

“You’re missing your Woof-Nine form.”  The dog on the phone barked.  I mean.  They could’ve let me know there was an issue when I submitted my application.  I submitted it online.  And I never got the little red error message saying that I was missing that form.  “Where am I supposed to send it?”  I barked.

Without license, I could get fined.  Which was not in my budget.  And even if it was in my budget, I could think of a million other things I could spend her money on.  So, after barking to the dog on the phone, I decided to just go down license office to get the situation handled.

STANDING IN THE LINE

“Is this the barking line?”  I barked to the dog in front of me in the license office.  Now, I didn’t think that I’d be in and out the office in five minutes.  But I also didn’t think that line would be darn near out the door.  There must’ve been at least 15 dogs in front of me.

It took Sugar two hours, 3 watched YapTube videos on my phone, and one long whine from the puppy behind her to finally get to the front of the line.  The dog at the counter looked my information up in the system.  “We don’t process this type of license here.”  She barked.  “You have to go to our Market Street location.”

“Are you kidding me?”  I barked.  “The dog I barked to on the phone instructed me to come to this location.”  Annoyed was an understatement.  I took off worked and closed my pupcakery to go down to the office and get this issue straight.  Plus, I hadn’t eaten yet.  I knew I should’ve packed a pupcake for a snack.

I wanted to read that dog for filth.  But what was that gonna do?  I had to get this done.  Plus, it’s not like she was the dog that told me to come to this location.  So, I just decided to keep it cute, bark “Thank you for your help,” and head down to the Market Street location.

MADE IT TO MARKET STREET

I made it to the Market Street location 30 minutes before they closed.  Luckily, there was no line.  The dog at the window extremely helpful as well.  She processed my application and helped me complete my Woof-Nine form.  “Thank you for processing this.” I barked to the dog at the desk.  “I know you’re getting ready to close.”

“No problem.  She barked back.  “I’ve been to your pupcakery.  Your Apple Cobbler Pupcakes are my favorite.”  Turns out that the dog from the first location could’ve processed Sugar’s paperwork.  But “there are a lot of new dogs working there.”  The dog barked.  Allegedly, they might not have known how to process the Woof-Nine form yet.

But I got my application processed.  And the dog at the desk confirmed that I wasn’t missing anymore paperwork.  Here’s the twist.  It’ll take another 30 days for me to receive my permanent license.  Since her temporary license was about to expire, the dog at the desk granted me an extension.

The next time she comes into my pupcakery, she’s getting a free Apple Cobbler Pupcake.  I made sure she knew that before I left as well.  Now, I can breathe easy.  But let’s hope I don’t have to come back to process more paperwork.
